Humanities
MORE: TRANSFORMATIONAL
A solid, quality education is one of the basic requirements for professionals today. Understanding of reality should be added to this, in the sense of understanding how the world works, why it works in a particular way and how it could be different. This is one of the focuses of the work of Universidade Metodista de São Paulo with students that pursue a career in the Humanities.
The development of this critical thinking together with technical skills encompass three values to be conveyed to the student body: the concept of citizenship, development of an ecological awareness and social justice.
Another axis that pervades the courses is appreciation of life, conservation of the environment and everything related to respect for human dignity and the ethical being. One of the ways to communicate these issues to students is through events, such as the Meeting of Popular Movements, the Week of Studies in Human Rights and the Philosophical Meetings, which encourage discussion and reflection based on the topics addressed.
However, for this critical vision to be possible, it is necessary to construct the first foundations back in basic education. For this, Metodista highlights the importance of teaching. Thus, among its initiatives are the institutional programs of the Institutional Scholarship Program for Teacher Initiation (PIBID), which awards scholarships to students and gives them the opportunity to work in public schools; the Methodist Teaching Certification Support, which includes Biology, Philosophy, Mathematics and Education courses; and the International Methodist Teaching Certification Program in which the student spends one or two years of the course in Spain or Portugal, obtaining a double degree at the end.
At another educational level are the graduate programs. One of them, focused on Religious Sciences, develops teaching and research activities involving teachers and students in the critical study of religious phenomena. The second, in Education, is founded on an approach through which we deal with the challenges of researcher teachers as managing educators capable of communicating the knowledge acquired. In this program, research produced and the problems of educating teachers are discussed, considering issues relevant to the Brazilian reality.
