I am pleased to announce that IMT, Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca, Italy, has launched a new Call for Applications for the PhD Program in Economics, Markets, Institutions.

The doctoral program, which lasts three years, tackles issues in political economy, industrial economics, applied public economics, the functioning of industries and markets, the impact of macroeconomics on productivity and growth. It is designed for students seeking jobs in academia and for those who wish to work in government and international agencies, as well as large companies. A distinctive feature of IMT program is the integration of theoretical, technical, and practical expertise. Theoretical methodologies and models are tested through the investigation of real-world cases. At program’s end, students will be able to identify commonalities as well as distinctive characters of economies, industries and markets. A key goal is to produce qualified professionals capable of analyzing, planning, and managing public policy.


CALL DETAILS:

  • 15 positions
  • No tuition fees for admitted students
  • Free meals at IMT canteen for accepted students
  • 8 full 3-year scholarships and up to 3 additional full grants
  • 8 free housing
  • Other facilities (e.g. health/accident/injury insurance, Italian Language and Culture Courses for foreign students)

Students will undertake 18 months of intensive courses and then perform original research work. An international faculty comprised of a large network of scholars from within and outside IMT will perform teaching and research supervision duties.

Applicants must hold a four- or five-year degree according to the previous rules of the Italian higher education system or an equivalent title. There are no restrictions on nationality. The deadline for applications is December 5, 2008.

Courses will start in March 2009. All courses and seminars will be held in English. Foreign PhD students will be required to attend an Italian Language and Culture Course.
