Law Scholarships 2008

(1) LLM / Graduate: Hauser Global Scholars Program, New York University, NY   [#85]

Program Description
Hauser Global Scholars is one of the most prestigious honors awarded to L.L.M students. In its first eight years, it has provided scholarships to 92 individuals from every continent and 34 countries. The scholarship program offers a fully-funded year at New York University Law School to outstanding applicants.  The program provides a foundation for the interchange of ideas stemming from different legal systems. Founded in 1995, it is the leading initiative pursuing the adaptation of United States law schools to an increasingly global perspective. 

Eligibility Requirements
Must be a graduate of law school outside of the United States. Scholars are chosen on their intellectual and leadership abilities and their capacity to participate productively in a global community of scholars and practitioners. Selections are made on the basis of outstanding academic merit without regard to financial need.

1. Students must submit the regular L.L.M. application (including a personal statement) and three essays: Briefly describe a current legal dilemma, controversy, or issue facing a country, a region, or the world and suggest a strategy you would use to address the problem (500 words);
2. Describe the most gratifying experience in your legal education and career (250 words);                                                                                                                     
3. List two ways you would expect to contribute to NYU School of Law as a Hauser Global Scholar.

If students are not awarded the Global Scholars Award, they will be automatically for other NYU Law School scholarships: the Grotius, Vanderbilt, Marshall, and Mallal Scholarships.

(2) Graduate: ILSP Alumni Scholarships, Washington College of Law, American University, Washington, DC   [#87]

International Legal Studies Program Announces 5 Full Tuition Scholarships

The ILSP is proud to announce the Alumni Fund Scholarship program. The ILSP Alumni Fund offers 5 full tuition scholarships to newly admitted LLM students who display rigorous academic dedication to the advancement of issues in international law.

Scholarship applications must be submitted with a completed LLM application. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The ILSP can only grant these scholarships to our LLM students who are eligible to receive an I-20 from the university and who maintain legal immigration status as an F-1 visa holder.

To Apply: Please answer both of the following questions:

  • Briefly describe a current regional, international or country-specific legal problem and offer your solution to the problem (no more than 750 words).
  • How will you contribute to WCL as an ILSP Alumni Fund Scholar? (no more than 250 words)
  • Submit a resume and your essay responses to the Assistant Director of Admissions at llminfo@wcl.american.edu.
  • Students must be admitted to the ILSP program to be considered for the scholarships
  • Awards are announced at the end of May and October. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Application Deadlines
- May 1 for students beginning in the Fall
- October 1 for students beginning in the Spring.

(3) Graduate:  Georgetown Law, Georgetown University, Washington, DC

Program Description
Georgetown Law provides the opportunity for legal students and professionals to deepen their understanding of both domestic and international law in a dynamic environment. Located within close proximity to Capital Hill in Washington, DC, Georgetown’s location offers its students’ unparalleled access to the US branches of government, Supreme Court, agencies, media outlets, and NGOs.  The Georgetown Law campus consists of Bernard P. McDonough Hall, the Edward Bennett Williams Law Library, The Eric E. Hotung International Law Building, the Bernard S. and Sarah M. Gewirz Student Center, and the new Sport & Fitness Center.  The five-story Law Library is the third largest in the US.

Georgetown Law’s curriculum is broad and diverse with approximately 300 courses and seminars.  It includes the nation's largest clinical program, as well as joint degree programs in law, business, foreign service (international relations), public health, philosophy, government, and a special program for Public Interest Law Scholars.  Although 80% of Georgetown Law students attend full-time, an evening program is also available for working professionals.  

Fellowship Information
The school offers numerous fellowships in the areas of taxation, employee benefits law, and law teaching in addition to clinical program fellowships.  Georgetown Law also awards five international scholarships for foreign-educated lawyers to apply to the LL.M. program.

General Admission:  November 1 early decision deadline JD program; November 30 second early decision deadline; February 1 final deadline for the Full-Time Division.
